Science Week in Crehana N.S.

 November 14th- 18th

This week in Crehana N.S. we had Science week and all classes participated in many Science experiments!  Thank you to Mrs. Fortune who organised Science week in the school. The children have learned so much and have had so much fun too!!  The photos below show the children’s experiments in the following:

Refraction of light – The Science: light travelling from one transparent substance to another.

Skittles Rainbow– The Science; the skittles are coated with sugar and when warm water is added the colouring and coat begin to dissolve very quickly.

Lava Lamp– The Science; The children explored density and discovered that oil floats on the surface because water is heavier or denser than oil. The Alka-Seltzer tablet, which is heavier or denser than both the oil and the water, sinks straight to the bottom. When it reaches the water, the tablet reacts with the water to make tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. These bubbles attach themselves to the blobs of colored water and cause them to float to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the gas escapes and the water sinks back under the oil again.

Unstoppable Bubbles– The Science; Liquid glucose forms a weak bond with the hydrogen in the water molecules, making evaporation take longer.

Standing on Paper Cups– The Science; When you try standing on the individual cups, they all get crushed. That’s because all of your weight is pressing down on the cups. When you place many cups under the cardboard the cardboard distributes, or spreads out your weight over all the cups.
