Science Week November 14th-18th
For Science week, 6th class did an experiment called “Standing on paper cups” and also made Lava Lamps!
Standing on Paper Cups– The Science; When you try standing on the individual cups, they all get crushed. That’s because all of your weight is pressing down on the cups. When you place many cups under the cardboard the cardboard distributes, or spreads out your weight over all the cups. Watch our science experiment video below for this. The children had so much fun!
Lava Lamps- We explored density and discovered that oil floats on the surface because water is heavier or denser than oil. The Alka-Seltzer tablet, which is heavier or denser than both the oil and the water, sinks straight to the bottom. When it reaches the water, the tablet reacts with the water to make tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. These bubbles attach themselves to the blobs of colored water and cause them to float to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the gas escapes and the water sinks back under the oil again.
